Yesterday evening we went to watch my brother Theo at a fencing tournament. I’m quite amused by the way that hitting people with swords has been transformed into an athletic event with an elaborate set of rules.

Does he look like an astronaut or what? Note the purple socks. When everyone in the (large) room is wearing not only uniforms but also masks, distinctive socks are a big help.

Winter break, or at least the portions of it that did not require doing something else with my hands:

This very long purple scarf is finished! It was almost exactly my height long when I cast it off, and it is now blocking to a foot or two more than that. The color is much more purply than these photos would suggest.

It’s a super-simple garter slip-stitch pattern, as described by Kay here (scroll down to The Manly Scarf). Mine is made of Odyssey merino yarn, in purple, and thus I don’t think it qualifies as “manly”. I’m also not sure how I feel about actually wearing something purple (damn sister), but in the abstract, I’m thrilled with this scarf.

This is closer to the proper color, but still too blue. I blame the fluorescent light in this corner of the room. Or sunspots.
Things that I have not finished but am still working on:

Socks for Mama! She got this yarn to make herself a scarf and hat, discovered she had far more than needed, and I said “If you give me the leftovers, I’ll make you socks!” This is another shot that doesn’t get the color right at all.

The pattern is Monkey from the current Knitty, and this shot shows the color much more accurately - it’s the South Pacific colorway.

I’m still fascinated and impressed by sock heels and the way they neatly turn a corner.

I’m also making a shawly-wrappy-thing - lace pattern, but worked in doubled-over sock yarn to make it warm and cozy. We’ll see what happens with this. So far I quite like it, but it’ll have to be blocked before anything is known for certain. I’m kinda sad because the transition where I started using the blue is more obvious than I wanted it to be, but I think I can live with it.

This is made with two strands of grey from Fearless Fibers, and then one of grey and one of Epicurus’ fade from periwinkle (go look at that yarn, it’s nifty!), and when the rest of the grey runs out (which will be soon, from the looks of things), it will be two strands (slightly offset from one another) of the periwinkle. The goal is for it to get gradually bluer as it reaches the edge.
